CONCENTRATION STATEMENT:
My concentration explores the modern construction of a family unit. I represented different perceptions of the structure of a family through series of varying ceramic pieces thrown on the wheel.
In series 1 and 2, I explored the harmony created through form. In series 1, the 3 pieces all assume an organic shape and form to unify them as a family. In series 2, the 5 pieces that range in height all display a cylindrical form; the differing heights create a variation within the rhythm of the cylindrical pieces. In both series, glaze is used as a unifying device. In series 3 and 9, glaze is used as the primary device to assemble the pieces as families. In series 3, the forms are contrastingly different, but the glaze is used to link the otherwise miscellaneous pieces together. In series 4 and 10, I used texture to create cohesive families. Series 6 explores the perception of an archetype of a sole extraneous member of a family, or the “black sheep” cliche, through the contrast between a matte black piece against the organically green pieces. In series 5,7, and 11, certain pieces are larger in order to represent familial roles; the larger pieces represent the guardians or parental figures, while the smaller pieces represent the children or younger members.
Creating these series allowed me to foster my skills constructing vessels on the wheel. The repetition of creating these families allowed me to wholly experience the exploration of different forms, textures, and glazes.
